TIPPING DURING GORILLA SAFARIS

Ranger guides, trackers, and porters are undeniably the unsung heroes of Gorilla safaris. It is possible that you have just returned from your gorilla trekking adventure and you are filled with admiration for how the enthusiastic porter has carried your backpack, camera equipment and held your hands while you hiked to higher elevations or descended slopes. Or you enjoyed the diversity of knowledge of the Park Ranger, or maybe you enjoyed a mouth-watering breakfast at one of the Safari Lodges around Volcanoes National Park. Whatever the case, you received some incredible service and you would like to leave a tip.

However, sometimes tipping etiquette can feel like a bit of a minefield. You might have too little and be perceived as stingy, ungrateful or ungenerous. While there are countries where tipping is a must and often expected, it is actually not mandatory in Rwanda but if you appreciate a service, it is a good idea to leave a tip. The question of tipping is one of the concerns we have received from travelers, especially towards their gorilla safaris.  Visitors have always asked “do you have to tip each member of the team individually?”, Do you tip the Ranger guide the same as trackers?” If you are traveling as a group, do you tip collectively or separately?”  “Is the tip given discreetly or openly””

Our article provides information on every visitor’s tipping etiquette during Gorilla safaris. From this article, you will understand how much to tip the guides, trackers, porters, Hotel/Lodge staff, and the safari driver during your gorilla safari. The Lodge and restaurant staff should also be considered when tipping during gorilla safaris. Nonetheless, it is important to note that these are merely suggestions and not rules to be followed. Remember it is not mandatory but rather courteous to leave a tip.

For Rwanda (like most African countries), leaving a tip is expected (although not mandatory) for an excellent service but the amount is at the discretion of the traveler. However, we recommend a daily tip of $10 to $15 per person per day for a porter. You will definitely need to tip the porter who works incredibly hard to carry your backpack and camera equipment as well as hold your hands when hiking to higher altitudes

For safari drivers, it can be around $5 to $10 per guest per day.

We also recommend tipping Park Rangers and trackers, whom we recommend about $15 to $20 per day for the Rangers and the same for trackers. In this case, you can tip collectively (with other members of the group) and can be handed over to the lead Ranger guide to be shared amongst all members of the team.

When it comes to Safari Lodge, hand tips can be given after a service has been performed (for instance carrying your bags upstairs) but what about other staffs that don’t directly interact with guests (such as Chefs)? Therefore, we recommend leaving a tip in their tipping boxes and the recommended amount is $5 to $10 per day.

For restaurants (especially during en-route lunches) on your way to Volcanoes National Park, it is recommended to add at least 10% to the total bill.

When is the best time to go for gorilla safaris?

The months of June to September and December to February are popular for gorilla safaris, with the precipitation levels reduced and temperatures warmer. These make forest trails less challenging (drier). These months also provide wonderful visibility for gorilla trekkers, and this the best time.

While gorilla treks are also possible in the wet months (March to May, and October to November), they are more challenging and dangerous because of heavier downpours, and high humidity. However, gorilla treks are shorter because mountain gorillas move to the borders of the forest and if you hope to enjoy discounts on accommodation, these months are the best.

WHAT MAKES GORILLA TREKKING IN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK SO SPECIAL?

Volcanoes National Park has intrigued very many primate lovers, it’s no wonder that it is the most popular Gorilla trekking destination in the World. This 160-square-kilometer Protected Area is Rwanda’s most incredible safari destination, with one of the best mountain gorilla sightings as well as the most jaw-dropping landscapes in the African Continent.

Established in 1925, Volcanoes National Park has been an inspiration for generations, considering it is a pillar of what mountain gorilla protection and sustainability can look like. It is undeniably a living testament to the country’s relentless efforts in the protection of one of Earth’s most sought-after wildlife species. This Park is therefore the ultimate gorilla trekking destination that provides something special for primate lovers. In this article, we provide information on what makes Gorilla Trekking in the Park so special;

It is easy to get to Volcanoes National Park

Whether you are interested in a fly-in safari (helicopter transfer) or a road trip, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is very accessible. Musanze airstrip, which is the closest airport/airstrip to the Park is only a 20 to 30-minute’ drive to most accommodation facilities around Volcanoes National Park such as One & Only Gorilla’s Nest, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, Singita Kwitonda Lodge, and Singita Kwitonda Lodge among others. However, if you are staying at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge, be prepared for a 60-minute drive from Musanze Airstrip. The majority of the helicopter flights to Volcanoes National Park/Musanze Airstrip are from Kigali International Airport.

By car, Volcanoes National Park is only about 3 hours from Kigali City/International Airport hence making it possible to undertake a one-day gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda. This makes gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park special.

Breathtaking Luxury stays and World-renowned hospitality

Most accommodation facilities around Volcanoes National Park have sustainability at their core, while simultaneously catering for every visitor’s budget. Among the three countries that offer mountain gorilla trekking (Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo), Volcanoes National Park offers the most exceptional level of luxury, albeit on the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes. It is also the high level of comfort, luxury, and sustainability of the Lodges that add to the magic of gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. From gastronome dishes to the breathtaking views as well as stupendous Safari Lodges, luxurious facilities, dedication and a high level of hospitality that the people have to the incredible Volcanoes National Park can be felt at the accommodation facilities.

Gorilla trekkers to Volcanoes National Park can experience real luxury in One & Only Gorilla’s Nest, Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Virunga Lodge, Bisate Lodge, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, and Amakoro Songa Lodge. However, there are also plenty more that can suit the budget and expectations of other visitors as well.

Unique vegetation

One of the reasons why visitors keep choosing gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is because of its outstanding vegetation and landscapes. Visitors who have tracked mountain gorillas in other places (especially Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park) can attest to the dense vegetation which isn’t the case with Volcanoes National Park. The 12 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park mainly occupy the bamboo zone, which is sparse compared to the gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

An opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Dian Fossey

Another interesting fact that makes gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park so special is the fact that you can walk in the footsteps of Dian Fossey. She was an American primatologist who established her Research Center (known as Karisoke Research Center) between the slopes of Mount Karisimbi and Bisoke, to study and protect the endangered mountain gorillas.  She dedicated almost two decades of her life to protecting and studying these Giant Apes which eventually became part of her life.

Dian Fossey habituated some of the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, participated in law enforcement activities such as patrols to protect these exceptional creatures, and even lost her life in the 1980s while trying to safeguard them. Therefore for your gorilla trekking adventure, you can add the hike to her gravesite to learn about her journey, and see how her legacy still lives on in Volcanoes National Park. This is something you can’t experience anywhere else but Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.

Volcanoes National Park offers groundbreaking mountain gorilla conservation

Volcanoes National Park stretches across an area that comprises 16,000 hectares of pristine vegetation zones. It also shares its borders with neighboring National Parks (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo), Volcanoes National Park is a haven for at least 35% of the World’s mountain gorillas. Terrestrial biodiversity and conservation programs in and around the Protected Area consider lots of things from expansion of the Park’s borders, waste management and recycling, and community development through revenue sharing, to plastic elimination

Best time to go gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park depends on whether you are uncomfortable with wet weather or wish to save more money during your trip. Rwanda generally has two seasons- the rainy/wet season and the dry season, which provide different experiences.

March, April, May, October, and November are the wettest months in Volcanoes National Park. Generally, gorilla trekkers avoid these months because forest trails become muddy and slippery. However, there are several benefits of gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park during these months. These months are the best for visitors looking for cheaper and quieter gorilla trekking adventures.

It will interest you to know that most Safari Lodges around Volcanoes National Park provide low season rates during these wet months. As most gorilla trekkers avoid the wet months, forest trails are not crowded and are instead quieter.

January, February, June, July, August, September, and December are the driest months for a gorilla trekking tour in Volcanoes National Park. These are often marked by mud-free and less slippery forest trails which make it less challenging to navigate the forest while searching for the habituated gorilla families.

GORILLA DOCTORS

If you’re an ardent Gorilla lover, then you have most likely heard of the “Gorilla Doctors”. This is known as the only Organization devoted to the conservation of the two Eastern Gorilla species- Eastern lowland Gorillas (Grauer’s gorilla) and Mountain Gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in their natural habitats. This, the Organization does through science and Veterinary medicine, while using the unique “One Health Approach”.

Gorilla Doctors comprises a local, regional, and International Veterinary team which is fundamental in providing hands-on medical assistance to injured and ill Gorillas (Eastern lowland and mountain gorillas). With a World population of about 1063 individuals (according to the 2018 Census), the endangered Mountain Gorillas are found in three countries – Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the Eastern lowland gorillas (with a population of about 6800 individuals) are only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Thanks to the declining population of the Eastern Gorillas, the health and overall well-being of every individual are important to the survival of these two subspecies of gorillas. The team of expert Veterinary Doctors monitors the health of Eastern gorillas from time to time, and steps in to provide treatment to individuals with life-threatening sickness or injury whenever possible.

HISTORY OF GORILLA DOCTORS

The Organization started in the 1980s with one American Veterinarian positioned in Rwanda, as the realization of the dream of American zoologist/Primatologist- Dian Fossey. Dian Fossey dedicated over 18 years of her life to protecting and studying mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.

Today, there are more than a dozen Veterinarians and Health Experts employed under the Organization, and they’re in all three countries where Eastern Gorillas live (Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo). The Doctors are always in-call 24/7 to provide treatment to injured and sick Eastern Gorillas.

Some of the renowned Gorilla Doctors through the years include Dr. Jan Ramer (who served as a regional veterinary manager between 2009 and 2011 and then from 2013 to 2015). She is known for leading several health interventions and oversaw the treatment of 8 new gorilla orphans and other programs. Dr. Dawn Zimmerman was in charge of managing the Gorilla Doctors programs at the regional base in Musanze between November 2011 and December 2023. Others include Dr. Felicia Nutter, Dr. David Gardener, Dr. Lucy Spelman, Dr. Magdalena Braum, Dr. Innocent Rwego, Dr. James Foster, and Dr. Liz Macfie among others.

GORILLA DOCTORS’ SUCCESS STORY

It’s no-brainer that the significant impact of Gorilla Doctors’ life-saving work is the growth of these Giant Apes’ population. Although they’re still endangered, the mountain gorillas are so far the only Gorilla sub-species whose population in the wild is growing. According to the 2010 Gorilla Census In the Virunga Conservation Area (Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo), it was discovered that their numbers grew by 26.3% over the preceding 7 years.

A study was done on the same population in 2011, and it was discovered that over two decades of people, the number of habituated mountain gorillas (that’s 70% of the entire population) had grown by 4.1% annually. This is evidence of Gorilla Doctors’ great works. Additionally, the unhabituated mountain gorilla population was discovered to have grown by 0.7% annually. Do you know the reason why habituated gorillas grow faster than the unhabituated ones? Well, it is because they accept humans in their proximity, in addition to benefiting from extreme conservation practices like Veterinary care. Therefore, it is not an overstatement to say Gorilla Doctors’ work is 40% responsible for the tremendous growth of Eastern lowland and Mountain gorilla populations in their natural habitats.

GORILLA DOCTORS’ HEALTHCARE PROGRAM

Gorilla Doctors undertake a Healthcare program that includes;

Undertaking Veterinary interventions

These include treating sick gorillas with painkillers or antibiotics or sometimes involve anesthetizing and treating these Giant Apes with human-induced or life-threatening painful injuries.

Monitoring Gorillas’ health

Another important healthcare program provided by the Gorilla Doctors involves monitoring the health of these Giant Apes. This is done to ensure the timely detection of injuries and illnesses.

Gorilla Doctors rescue and provide Veterinary Care to the Eastern Gorillas that have been orphaned by poachers and animal traffickers.

Preventive healthcare

Another program provided by the Gorilla Doctors includes providing preventive healthcare to committed Park personnel (Park Rangers, Trackers, Gorilla Researchers, and others) who work tirelessly to protect the Giant Apes in their natural habitats. Additionally, local community members and their livestock living close to Gorilla natural habitats are protected to reduce the risk of transmitting diseases to the Giant Apes, and vice versa.

Gorilla Doctors also study health trends for better prediction of disease outbreaks and their causes. This is done to reduce the risk of transmitting diseases to Gorillas.

Autopsy (Post-mortem) examinations

Gorilla Doctors conduct Autopsy examinations on dead gorillas, as a way of ascertaining the cause of their death. In so doing, they will learn about the general health problems that led to the death of the Gorilla.

Gorilla Doctors preserve biological samples (such as excrement, blood, urine, tissue, and DNA/Genetic material samples) to be used by Researchers across the World, examining primate health problems.

WHAT TO PACK FOR GORILLA SAFARIS IN RWANDA & UGANDA

When it comes to gorilla safaris, there is a lot to expect. A gorilla safari in Uganda and Rwanda offers nature enthusiasts a lifetime opportunity to immerse themselves in the wild to encounter a group of rare mountain gorillas. After you have adequately prepared for your adventure and now you are fully ready, here is what to expect during gorilla safaris;

Packing right

We believe that the point when you have prepared 100%, it means you are ready to embark on your primate adventure. Packing right is key during gorilla safaris in Uganda or Rwanda. Even on the actual day trek with gorillas, these items are required of all visitors. They include waterproof hiking boots, a valid gorilla permit, gardening gloves, a safari hat, a rain jacket, comfortable clothes, a first aid kit, a sweater, sunscreen, and many others.

Adequate fitness practice

The gorilla trek is a little strenuous and other than practicing to acquaint yourself with the tough altitude, you also need to come along with some snacks and water. The energy boosters are essential to help you enjoy a round gorilla trekking adventure.

Embarking on a long trek & is specific

Gorilla trekking is a long day trek through the jungle. It is not for everyone but particularly for persons above 15 years. A gorilla trek is strenuous and takes hikers about 2-6 hours to navigate via the lush forest in search of a gorilla group in the wild.

Allocation of gorilla groups and park ranger guides.

During your gorilla safari, all visitors are assigned to habituated gorilla families and park ranger guides. Each of the destinations features habituated gorilla groups and in Uganda, you have about 25 groups all open for gorilla trekking and some set for gorilla habituation experience, especially in Bwindi National Park. In Rwanda, primate adventure seekers with a plan to track gorillas have 13 groups to explore.

Verification at the park offices

Carry a valid passport and visa. Beyond gorilla permits, you need a valid passport and visa. These travel documents are essential, especially at the park offices for verification. The gorilla permit is crosschecked against your passport to ascertain that indeed it is you.

Briefing

Regardless of the destination, briefing is expected and is done early in the morning at the park offices by the park official. During the briefing session, expect to learn the different gorilla trekking rules and regulations, etc.

Respect the set gorilla trekking regulations.

During your gorilla safaris, ensure that you respect the set rules and regulations for gorilla trekking. There are multiple guidelines to be followed during gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. They include observing a distance of 7-8 meters away from gorillas, trekking a gorilla family in a group comprising 8 pax, expect to spend a maximum of one hour with mountain gorillas in the wild, when taking pictures –the camera should be free from a flashlight, do not go to track gorillas when sick, and observe low tone when tracking gorillas.

Spend an hour with a family of gorillas.

During gorilla trekking tours, expect to spend a maximum of 1 hour face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas in the wild. The one hour involves observing the social behaviors, group structure, and photography. This is the most sensational moment of all time when it comes to gorilla treks.

A gorilla trek with an experienced park ranger guide

All gorilla safaris are conducted with the company of an experienced park ranger guide. As per the park authorities, no one is allowed to track gorillas without a guide. The park ranger guides are usually available at the respective parks.

Hire a porter

Gorilla trekking is a strenuous adventure and generally, it is unpredictable. Hiring a porter is a great thing because it relieves you from the heavy load. The porters help carry heavy luggage and at the end of it all, you have plenty of time to concentrate on your gorilla trek. A porter can be hired at the park offices at around USD 15 to 20.

Unpredictable adventure

Gorilla trekking begins early morning and is done once a day. However, be aware that this is a completely unpredictable adventure and may go for 2 to 6 hours. The length of your primate adventure depends on a number of factors including the speed of walking, the nature of the habitat, and the location of mountain gorillas.

During the gorilla trek, you navigate via the undefined paths. There are specific trails designated for your search for gorillas as is the case with game drives in the savanna parks.

When to visit

Mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda can be tracked at any time of the year. But the best time for gorilla trekking is during the peak dry season. This occurs from June to September, then another phase begins from December to February. The dry season is characterized by less rain, clearer skies, thinner vegetation, and other favorable variables. The trails generally become passable due to low rainfall amounts and the thinner vegetation allows you to capture great pictures of gorillas.

Even during the wet or rainy season, the parks are also open for gorilla trekking. The two phases of the wet season experienced by the gorillas run from March, April, May, and October, to November. Heavy rains and dense vegetation cover define the wet season but there are higher chances to engage in a gorilla trek. It is around the wet season when the gorilla safari parks record an abundant food supply for mountain gorillas to depend on.

Plan for your travel.

How to get to your respective destinations for gorilla trekking is essential. Hiring a 4×4 safari vehicle is key for your road trips. Take note that gorilla safari destinations are far from the city centres and renting a car is one way for you to reach these places. The tour operator on the ground is in a position to find for you a comfortable ride for your road trip.

You can also plan for a fly-in vacation to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. All flights to this park begin from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro/Kihihi airstrip.

GORILLA TREKKING SAFETY GUIDELINES

“What are the safety guidelines for gorilla trekking?” This is one of the most common questions that we always receive from potential clients or visitors who have confirmed gorilla trekking tours. Without harassing, and interfering, gorilla trekkers must get within a good (and safe) proximity to the endangered mountain gorillas. Or rather, the Giant Apes can often get close to visitors. Continue reading our article to see how close you can legally go to the endangered mountain gorillas.

Although Mother Nature permits mountain gorillas to assume their movements and schedules, gorilla tours in Volcanoes National Park, where these adventures are offered in the land of a thousand hills, visitors are expected to follow the minimum viewing distance at all times. So, how close can visitors get to the mountain gorillas?

During gorilla trekking adventures, visitors can get as close as 7 meters (approximately 23 feet) to the endangered Giant Apes. This is considered a safe “approach distance” and the closest you can get to the mountain gorillas without disturbing or harassing them. In so doing, the mountain gorillas can live naturally and without interference in their day-to-day routines (of playing, foraging, resting, nursing their babies, grooming each other, and even mating).

Although visitors know the recommended viewing distance and follow it while observing and taking photos, these Giant Apes don’t see this distance. There will be cases of mountain gorillas approaching closer than the recommended minimum distance, or even touching your body (especially the curious and playful infants). So, what do you do when the mountain gorilla gets closer than the minimum distance? If this happens, it is advisable to slowly move back to at least the minimum approach distance.

Avoid chasing or trying to touch, or restrict the path of the mountain gorilla. On a rare occasion, a Rwanda Development Board Park Ranger might ask you to move back beyond the minimum approach distance, if the gorilla appears to still be approaching or behaving as if it is still interested in being closer. By following the 7-meter approach distance, visitors are guaranteed to have a safe and enjoyable gorilla trekking experience, while helping to keep the Giant Apes wild.

When approaching the mountain gorillas, it is important to note that these Giant Apes are unpredictable and may unexpectedly charge or retreat into hiding if feeling threatened. While it is rare, people may get injured after disturbing mountain gorillas that were resting or nurturing their babies. It is undeniable that all animals, mountain gorillas inclusive need rest to survive. If you get too close to them, then they will no longer feel comfortable enough to rest. The dominant silverback (the leader of the gorilla family/group) will keep a watchful eye on you and might suddenly try to defend its members or command them to go somewhere else hence prematurely ending your long-awaited gorilla trekking experience. Getting too close to the endangered mountain gorillas can cause panic, forcing them to stampede to get away hence sometimes causing injury. Regardless of the best intentions of curious visitors (gorilla lovers), repeated and frequent disturbances put the mountain gorillas on edge and affect their overall health, well-being, and survival. All in all, for the safety and welfare of the endangered mountain gorillas, visitors should always keep the minimum approach distance, which is 7 meters (or 23 feet).

If you are taking photos and observing, and a curious infant gorilla approaches, slowly move back without scaring it. Avoid direct eye contact or trying to scare it away, or it might try to defend itself. Remember, a mature male gorilla is over 5 times more powerful than a man.

Signs of disturbance of the endangered mountain gorillas

Uneasy or disturbed mountain gorillas react by exhibiting a sudden change of behavior that includes chest beating (by the silverback/s), aggressive behavior like charging and screams, changes in breathing patterns, and an abrupt change in body posture or positioning.

Other important gorilla trekking regulations

Avoid feeding mountain gorillas. What may appear as a harmless fun or photo opportunity can put visitors at a huge risk and might have a fatal outcome for the Giant Apes. Like a cat or dog, a Mountain gorilla might seek out an easy feed and become demanding. An infant gorilla might bite or snap when teased with food or if regular feeding begins to be expected. Intentionally feeding mountain gorillas (or any animal in the wild) is illegal, as they are wild animals and hunt their food from the natural environment.

Only a maximum of 8 visitors can watch a habituated gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park. This rule is important for protecting these Giant Apes from any possible diseases and avoiding disturbances or distress as they go about their daily routines.

Avoid throwing any kind of rubbish in the forest- bottles, cigarettes, food wraps, or synthetic material, as they can cause problems to the mountain gorillas (especially the curious infants) if they accidentally swallow them.

The maximum viewing time for a habituated gorilla family in Volcanoes National is one hour. Usually, a gorilla trekking tour lasts anywhere between one and six hours, to navigate the jungle in search of the allotted habituated gorilla family. Afterward, one hour is all you have to watch and take photos of these Giant Apes going about their exciting day-to-day routines. Regardless of how beneficial gorilla tours are for the Giant Apes, they can also stress them out.

Best time to visit the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park

There is no clear “best time” to visit the mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, as there are pros and cons to both seasons. The rainy season, which runs from March to May, then October to early December is marked by heavy downpours hence muddy and slippery trails and forest floors. The advantage of this season is the affordability of gorilla safaris as Lodges provide “low season rates”.

The dry season, typically from June to September and mid-December to February is when temperatures are hot and less downpours. This season provides better access to the forest and less challenging trekking options. The disadvantage of visiting gorillas in the dry season is the high demand for gorilla adventures, which necessitates booking at least 12 months in advance. Also, Lodges charge higher rates in the dry/peak seasons.
